A futon needs an other way of maintenance than a western mattress.
A futon can be used on a normal western lattoflex but after a while you’ll get problems with the futon sagging through. A futon is placed traditionally on a coco fibre mat or a rice fibre mat, also called a tatami. These are very rugged and they’ll not bounce like a normal western bed, but they’ll provide a perfect way of getting air through your futon, which is needed to keep the layers of cotton in your futon more elastic. The effect of a tatami can be copied by a large wooden board in which you drill holes every 10 cms or so to let a bit of air through.. The lifespan of a futon will be lengthened like this. Normally you could say a futon lasts 6 to 7 years. Then it should be replaced.
